Beaches and Giant Turtles

The Seychelles is and island nation off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear water and natural beauty. It is also the richest nation in Africa as measured by GDP per capita. Of course it helps to have a vibrant tourism sector, fisheries that yield export dollars along with industrial processing of vanilla, coconuts and rope. Of course, the per capita number benefits from a small population – 105,000. Number two on the list is Mauritius, we’ll be there in a few days.

The people are very friendly with a warm creole French accented vibe. Food leans heavily on seafood with creole spice. The “fresh catch” is just that- one local restaurant, La Gaulette. presented us with whole fish on a platter- you want the grouper or the red snapper, this particular gleaming specimen or that one? Then grilled and spiced to your preference, served with a variety of sides and sauces.

We spent three nights at the brand new Canopy by Hilton, a sparking resort on the southwest side of Mahe Island. In the evening, the lighted fountains provided a White Lotus vibe. The dinners here were excellent, the fresh catch (cara cara) was fantastic, served with a choice of sides and sauces- we went with the recommended lemon butter, a fine choice.

By our 2nd full day here we had the energy to venture out and explore the island. First stop was the National Botanical Garden, full of tropical specimens (duh) and home to some giant tortoises. Then into the capital, Victoria, the smallest of all the world’s capital cities. Below are pictures of the coco de mer, the largest nut or seed in the world, showcased by Daniel the Driver. They are male and female and the shapes are, ah, interesting.

Our next “stop” was to board our means of transportation for the next 16 days, the Silver Spirit. Then on to our first port, the island of La Digue, the 4th largest of the Seychelles at a whopping 3.9 square miles and boasting a population of 2,800. It is lush and beautiful, known for its beaches, snorkeling and laid back atmosphere. We had the opportunity to visit L’Union Estate, a historic coconut plantation and vanilla farm and then  the spend some time on Anse Source d’Argent, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

But first- some random flora and fauna!

Until next time!
